A Personal Story

Dear Readers,

Here is a story about the time I found out something horrible, that turned into something amazing.

“ How much longer?” I wailed.
“ Just let the medicine that you took kick in, when it works you be able to sleep the rest of the way.” said my mother.
Sitting there with the blanket wrapped around me, I dug into the bag of snacks and pulled out a small bag of sour cream and onion chips. My eyes felt a little droopy, and before I could even think about it, I was sound asleep.
The next thing I knew, I was wide awake cramped up inside my grandma’s small car. Looking down I saw some crumbs on my lap. Peering out the car window I noticed that the way we usually go to get to my great grandma’s house was abandoned, so we were going a way that we never went before.
“ Why are we going this way?” I wondered.
“ You’ll find out soon enough,” mother murmured.
We made a sharp left, rounded a corner, and was instantly in a neighborhood. Driving a few blocks down I stared at all the unique houses. Seeing a small barn with horses inside, I squealed with excitement.
We finally turned onto a cobblestoned driveway, and parked the car. Looking through the windshield I saw a completely new house. I wrinkled my eyebrows in disapproval. I pulled my  bulging full suitcase out of the trunk, and walked up the sidewalk to the front door.
Ding dong! No answer. Knock knock!
“ Hello? Who is it?” asked great grandma ( Eah.)
“ It’s us Eah! It’s been so long.” we shouted.
“ You have gotten older!” she said to me.
We walked inside the house, that had that special smell of your grandma, cookies, and peanuts. I felt something licking my legs. I looked down and there was good old little Max sitting at my feet, wagging his big old tail.
“ Hey buddy, how have you been.” I asked in a voice like I was talking to a little toddler.
“ I think we need to talk to you about something London.” Mom said.
“ Let me show you something.”
We got back into the car. Mom and Eah in the front, grandma and me in the back. We drove down the way that I was used to going. We turned onto some gravel and tiny rocks, where Eah’s house used to be, it was all gone.
The beautiful garden with flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees all gone. The shining blue and silver river was all gone. The bridge that I would always love to walk over was gone. Everything was gone!
There was some left over building blocks, rocks, and a broken roof. I turned over to my family, waiting for an explanation.
“ They took everything away. The garden, the house, and the property that was mine.” Eah said hunched over her cane.
“ Why did this happen? Everything was so wonderful and exciding. I would always love to help you plant things in the garden and grow all kinds of sweet smelling things. But, I guess that’s all gone now.” I said with shivers going down my back.
“ Nonsense, At Eah’s new house there will be a place to grow beautiful things again!” my grandma said.
My fingers, tongue, and mouth when numb. There was nothing else to say. Feeling something on my shoulder, knowing what it was, I turned and buried my face in my mother's coat.
We hopped back into the car and headed back to Eah’s house. Looking out at those same houses, I searched my memory for the great times we had at the old house. We finally got back to the house, and I zoomed in.
“Mother, I’m going to see the new backyard!” I shouted.
“Ok, go ahead honey!” mother shouted back from outside.
I unlocked the back door, closed my eyes, and took a few steps out into the back. I stood there, frozen like a popsicle, and opened my eyes.
I blinked a couple times, and a huge smile formed on my face.
